BUTTONHOLE OR BLANKET STITCH

Buttonhole is a strong stitch with many different uses. A row of buttonhole stitches has a very definite ‘edge’ that can be used to secure two fabrics together or as a neatening stitch on cut fabric edges. When the stitches are worked closely together, covering the fabric, this is generally known as buttonhole stitch. When they are a little more spaced apart, this is known as a blanket stitch.

Left to right: buttonhole stitch as an edge, buttonhole stitch around an applied circle, buttonhole stitch as a surface stitch, blanket stitch as an edge
